Wolverhampton street dancing girls are top in hip hop clash

House of Dance, who are based at Eyes Studio, Market Place, won 25 trophies across various categories at the Spectrum Hip Hop Championships in Dublin.

The group finished first place in the under 12s, under 14s, under-16s and over-18s solo events. In the over 18 category, they also claimed second, third and fourth.

They took the top prize for the adult intermediate crew category, and were deemed the best under 14s trio by judges.

To top it off, House of Dance collected the gong for best overall crew, for which they were given a team trophy as well as individual ones. Natasha Clarke, who has been the director for 15 years, was delighted with the trophy haul.

“We have won quite a lot of trophies but never 25 at one event, that’s a record for us,” she said.

“We had never been to that competition before, we had competed all over the country but wanted to go there for a new experience and to meet people.

“We got there and started winning all of these trophies, and some of them were about three or four feet tall.

“I thought ‘oh my god’ how are we going to get all of these back. At one stage, we thought there was no way of doing it.

“The flight company wouldn’t let us take them on the plane back but Spectrum organised a shipping back for us.”

The competition ran from December 4-6 but House of Dance almost never made it due to Storm Desmond.

“All of the other flights had got cancelled, ours was the only one that flew from Birmingham Airport,” added Clarke.

“It was a nightmare flight, everybody was screaming on the plane.

“The judges had to fly over from the UK and only got there early on Saturday morning, it was touch and go whether it was actually going to go ahead.

“The competition was packed though, there was easily over 450 dancers there. When the girls won the solos there was about 150 dancers in each category.”

House of Dance are looking for new members to get involved with classes.
