Teenager promotes the benefits of street dancing

A Torfaen teenager who leads a street dance class is encouraging other youngsters to get involved.

Eighteen-year-old Paige Holliday, of Cwmbran, wants to share the benefits of the high-energy activity and dispel its negative reputation.

Miss Holliday said whilst street dance has had a positive impact on their lives, the group is concerned that some people view it negatively.

“I think the name is all people need to form a stereotype. This type of dancing was originally from the streets and people usually have mixed views on this.”

“Busking and town performances may be annoying to some, but it's also a way we can openly share our passion.

“It has a positive effect because you’re always surrounded by supportive people with good energy. I would love for people to appreciate street dance as an art form.”

The group is working with Fixers, the charity that gives young people a voice, to create a film spreading the word about how street dance has benefited them.

The team explained that street dance gives them a way to express their emotions and encourages them to appreciate their bodies.

She added: “When I dance everything else is shut out. It’s the only thing I look forward to.”

She adds: “Dance isn’t just for the younger generation. I believe it is for everyone.

“As long as you’re passionate, you can do anything.”

The charity, Fixers, works with young people aged between 16 and 25 across the UK and provides them with resources to help them campaign on issues they feel strongly about.
