Prince Charles given dance shoes birthday gift for Queen on Royal Ballet School visit

The Prince of Wales was when visiting the Royal Ballet School in London presented with a pair of decorative ballet shoes as a birthday gift for the Queen.

Prince Charles president of the Royal Ballet since 2003, watched a performance by the school's young dancers during a tour of its White Lodge campus in Richmond Park.

His visit was hosted by the school's artistic director, Christopher Powney, and its chairman of governors, the Duchess of Wellington - who led the Prince to the lodge on foot after its front gates momentarily jammed.

Charles visited classrooms and watched a group at work in a dance studio before being treated to performances by the school's pupils, some of whom will showcase their work at the Royal Opera House next month.

Student Lydia Brayshaw presented him with a pair of decorated pointe shoes as a special present for the Queen to mark her 90th birthday.

Founded in 1926, the Royal Ballet School offers students an eight-year training programme. But a funding standstill over the last five years has left it struggling with a £1.5 million dent in its finances.
