Helston dance group's funding helps it to grow

The young people of Helston Youth Dance (HYD) based at Helston Community College are delighted with the funding they have received from the West Cornwall Youth Trust to help them continue in 2015/16.

HYD was originally set up by Helston Youth Centre and was supported by youth workers fromCornwall Council. The closure of the youth centre and the loss of the youth workers prompted the trust to step in to help the group continue and develop.

The trust's grant enable the dancers to run a Day of Dance for primary school children which has resulted in a strong team of 25 young people now attending weekly dance sessions. The trust is now working with HYD and Helston Community College, which is providing spaces for the dancers to work safely, with two dance leaders and a supporting youth worker.

The dancers are now busy preparing for a dance competition, performances and Arts Award accreditation in 2016.

“It is an exciting time for HYD," said dance lead Pat Hickman. "With the funding support from WCYT and support from Helston Community College we have been able to grow the group. Dancers from ten to 18 are working together and creating their own work for local performances and competitions outside Cornwall.

"Some of the young people attend to have fun, develop new skills and meet new friends – it’s a great atmosphere. Others are serious about their dancing and will go on to do GCSE dance, A level dance and professional dance training. They are all a pleasure to work with.”
