Fundraising for dance dream

A group of street dancers from Andover are hoping to raise enough funds to representing the UK on the European stage after reaching the world qualifiers in Germany this year.

Oblivion Street Dance School, taught by Tee Minya, a Britain's Got Talent finalist dancer, entered three crews from the school into the British UDO championships in Portsmouth, with two crews successfully making it to the next stage.

The two successful teams were Oblivion Recall (16+ beginners), who finished fourth and Oblivion Vortex (16+ advanced) who came second.

Oblivion Vortex's second place finish has given them automatic qualification to represent UK in the world European qualifiers in May.

Whilst both crews, thanks to finishing in the top five, qualified to represent the UK in Scotland in August.

The group has held a couple of events, including a jumble sale and bingo night, raising a total of £450 towards the costs of competing in the forthcoming competitions.

However Oblivion dance group manager, Tanya Tuson, admitted that the funds required to go to the Germany could be just a little too out of reach and they may have to channel their fundraising efforts into getting both teams to Scotland.

"To go to Germany it would cost about £4,000 which is a huge amount," she said.

"It will cost about £2,000 to take them to Scotland, if we raise half that money to cover travel costs and accommodation it would be a great help.

"These competitions last four days and you have got to pay for entry costs."

She added that she would be keen to hear from businesses who would be willing to sponsor the dancers.

To add to their fundraising total the dancers will be bag packing in ASDA in the near future, as well as having a dance showcase at Harrow Way Community School on Saturday 27 February.

Instructor, Tee Minya, said: "As a teacher who has taught them from the very start I am so pleased with all my students hard work and dedication which has led them to progress this far.

"This is just the beginning of Oblivion there will be bigger opportunities they will achieve.

"They are very inspiring."
