Jane McCloskey named as new chair of National Dance Company Wales’ board

National Dance Company Wales (NDCWales), the nation’s contemporary dance company, has today announced that Jane McCloskey will be the next chair of its board, as of September. Jane is Dean of Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of South Wales; her latest role in an impressive 30-year career in media and the creative sector, both in Wales and across the UK.

Jane took up her post at the University of South Wales, where she is also a Professor of Broadcast Media, in June 2016. The faculty combines the University’s renowned Schools of Music & Drama, Media and Art & Design at a newly-expanded campus in Cardiff, and is one of the UK’s foremost centres of excellence in arts education.

Her broadcasting career has seen Jane rise from being ITV’s youngest network drama scriptwriter at the age of 17 to Director of ITV Wales and West Ltd, and beyond. Most recently, she was Controller, Strategic Partnerships & Sustainability at the BBC 2012-2015, creating top-level, multi-million-pound partnerships with Arts Council England, the British Film Institute and many other national bodies.

In addition, Jane has served on the board of several major organisations. She was a founder Non-Executive Director of The Space, a pioneering digital arts channel that has been instrumental in developing the relationship between the UK’s technological and arts sectors – including dance – and a Director of the Celtic Film & Television Festival.

Jane will replace the previous chair of NDCWales’ board, Andrew Davies, former Economy Minister in Welsh Government, and who served from 2010 until November 2016. Since then, Gareth Powell has served as Interim Chair during the recruitment process.

Jane McCloskey said: “I am delighted to be joining the board of NDCWales to take up the role of Chair at a pivotal and exciting moment for the company. I have been hugely impressed by the vibrant creativity, ambition and dynamism of the organisation and look forward to supporting colleagues on the board and the executive team to build on an already great reputation and go forward together from strength to strength.”

NDCWales’ Interim Chair, Gareth Powell, said: "This is an incredibly exciting appointment for the Company, and it comes at a very busy time. NDCWales is already a major player in the country’s cultural scene, with several exciting projects on the horizon, and Jane’s wealth of creative and media experience means she’s very well placed to help the company enhance its reputation even further.”

NDCWales’ Chief Executive Paul Kaynes said: "We’re very excited to have attracted a Chair of Jane’s calibre and experience. She has much to offer the Company as we expand our work and the places we tour, create digital collaborations and new partnerships. Her current role as Dean of Faculty puts her in one of the most interesting creative industries roles in Wales today – and we look forward to helping forge an ever more dynamic creative profile for the nation together."
