Fancy footwork set to light up the Academy

Performers will take to the stage in a huge competition which brings more than 300 people together for a display of dance.

Colour, music and fun will light up The Oldham Academy North this Sunday as the best of Oldham's street dancers unite for the contest.

Tickets are still available for the Oldham Street Dance Championships which kick off with a group performance at 11.30am.

Organisers Hannah Worley and Jennifer Lynch attracted an audience of more than 250 people and eight dance groups to their launch event last year.

Ms Worley said: "We started the event after realising there weren't many local opportunities for dance groups to compete.

"The main aim is to provide a fun and friendly environment in which children and young people can showcase their talents.

"A competitive element is great for encouraging teamwork and determination and we encourage all of our participants to be supportive of each other.

"I'm quite excited for it. Last year we were more nervous but we've had lots of people register.

Qualified

"We are hoping to be bigger and better this year.

"We are ready to go."

Caroline's School of Dance, Infinity Dance, Fierce Dance Oldham and one Huddersfield-based dance school are among the contestants.

Solo, duo and crew performances make up the event, which will be judged by three qualified dance practitioners.

Spectators and parents are even invited to get up and have a go in the parent category.

Winners of the individual competitions will be announced in trophy presentations throughout the championships, with the winner of each solo category going head-to-head to be crowned Oldham's Ultimate Street Dancer.
